Kitchen Cabinets – Styles and Types

Where do you start when you are ready to renovate your kitchen? Most homeowners venture to Lowe’s and Home Depot when they are looking for cabinets, appliances, and more. Little do most homeowners know that there are many types and styles of affordable, quality cabinetry for your new kitchen. Let’s take a minute to look at the different styles and types of kitchen cabinets that you can choose from.

Style
There are many different styles of kitchen cabinets. These range from many options, but we are going to take a detailed look at some of today’s most popular choices.

  1. Slab
Slab cabinets are flat doors sitting in front of the cabinet. They trend towards very modern and mid-century kitchen designs. These cabinets can come painted or with a wood veneer. You can sometimes find these in big box stores, but more often they are sourced online and through wholesale vendors.

  2. Shaker
Shaker cabinets are a recessed door with a proud rectangle design that also sits in front of the cabinet. They are featured in most home designs today as they are a very popular choice. You can find these at any big box store.

  3. Slab Shaker Combo
This cabinet design incorporates a slab door front with a shaker door. Another very popular choice that can save you some $$!

  4. Inset
Inset cabinets are very popular in Europe and are beginning to trend here in the States. These cabinets come in slab or shaker but are “set” into the cabinet instead of laying in front of it. These are much harder to source and must be found locally or through certain online vendors.

  5. Raised Panel
Raised Panel cabinets were very popular in the 2000s through the 2010s. While still used today, they aren’t quite as popular. Both panel pieces are raised on the door with it resting proud in front of the cabinet.

Types
Cabinetry comes in many different types. Let’s go through where you can source and find these different types of cabinetry.

  1. RTA Cabinets
RTA stands for Ready-To-Assemble. These cabinets will save you money unless you are also paying the labor cost for assembly.

  2. Pre-Assembled Cabinets
Pre-Assembled cabinets are put together and ready for installation. This will save you time but cost a little more.

  3. Custom Cabinets
Most people hear custom cabinets and assume they could never afford these. Don’t let the name scare you! Many times, custom cabinetry can be comparable in cost to RTA and Pre-Assembled cabinets. Shop around for local cabinetry makers in your area. You may be surprised!

You also may want to explore these cabinet features, which come mostly standard nowadays.

Dove-Tailed
Dove-tailed refers to the type of drawer joint used when building a cabinet drawer. This drawer joint is very strong and well-built and an industry standard for most kitchen cabinets built today.

Slow Close
Slow close is a term referring to the type of door hinge. Slow close hinges will let you close your cabinet doors and drawers WITHOUT a bang! Most cabinet makers use slow close hinges, but be sure these are included when you get quotes.

Besides style and type, be sure to pick out colors that complement countertops, tile, and fixtures. Wood tones, two-toned, or one solid color are all great choices depending on the style of your home and the look you are going for. Additionally, you can opt for custom colors, glass panels, and wood-toned shelves to give your kitchen cabinetry a unique look in your home.
